KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Better Business Bureau in Western Michigan is putting out a warning for people to watch out for scammers who take advantage of winter weather.
President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau in Western Michigan Lisa Frohnapfel says scam artists and bad businesses “prey on vulnerable situations by posing as community members on social media, and pressuring homeowners to make decisions before any research can be done.”
BBB officials say people will canvas neighborhoods and community social media pages after storms, offering repair service and snow removal deals that seem, and are, too good to be true. They will take people’s money and never do the work.
While it is not unusual for contractors from various construction-related industries to offer assistance in mitigating ice dams and winter storm repair, the BBB says it is important to do your research and hire companies you can trust.
That includes visiting BBB.org to research a company before making a decision; only hiring licensed and insured contractors; checking your homeowners insurance; getting several bids and seek referrals; get and read a written contract; don’t pay the full amount up front; and be patient.
