DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – As expected, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced his plans on Wednesday to run for the Governor’s office in the State of Michigan in 2026.
But in a stunning move, the long-time Democrat announced he would run as a independent.
Duggan said in an interview with the Associated Press, “It’s clear to me that there are a lot of people in this country who are tired of both parties and tired of the system and so I want to offer people a choice.”
He was first elected as Mayor of Detroit in 2013. Duggan was re-elected in 2017 and 2021.
He released a five minute video on Wednesday highlighting his accomplishments in the mayor’s office. Duggan also explained why he decided to run for Governor as a independent.
Duggan says the current system forces people to choose sides, not find solutions.
Duggan’s decision to run as a independent is potentially another blow for Michigan Democrats after they lost control of the State House in last month’s election.
Current Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer is term limited after 2026.
