PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage city council has approved a special resolution for former member and local leader, Dr. Romeo Phillips, for a lifetime of service to the community.
Dr. Phillips was the first African-American to be elected to the city council after serving on a large number of other boards committees and community groups.
He says he was humbled by the honor.
Phillips, who is 96, will be leaving town soon to live with family members, according to current councilmember Vic Ledbetter.
A community wide celebration of the former Kalamazoo College professor will be held at the Douglass Community Association in Kalamazoo Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.
