CENTREVILLE, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A Vicksburg man has been formally charged in St. Joseph County in connection with the death of a ten-year-old on Monday morning.
According to on line court records, 29-year-old Logan Keith Thomas was charged with driving while his license was suspended causing death and having no insurance during his arraignment on Tuesday in St. Joseph County District Court.
A fourth time habitual offender sentencing enhancer was also filed by prosecutors.
The child was struck by a vehicle and killed on Banker Street near Balk Road south of Nottawa at about 8:00 a.m. Monday morning.
The Sheriff’s Department has not released the name or the gender of the child who was killed. Deputies say they had received a report that several children had been hit.
Lifesaving measures on the ten-year-old were not successful and the youngster was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the suspect told them that he did not see the children in time.
Not guilty pleas on behalf of Thomas were entered and a cash or surety bond was set at $100,000. If he posts bond, the conditions included having no drugs or alcohol and he can not drive a vehicle.
Deb Davis from the Prosecutor’s office said Thomas has failed to appear for court hearings multiple times along with two prior Operating While Intoxicated related convictions within seven years which is why his driver’s license was revoked.
She added he had multiple Driving While License Suspended convictions and had a reckless driving charge reduced to a careless driving count within the last year.
Additional charges could be filed. Davis said they are awaiting blood results adding Thomas admitted to using a controlled substance that was not prescribed to him the night before the crash.
Davis said, “The concern is he continues to drive and he shouldn’t be driving.”
A pre-examination conference was scheduled for December 17 with a preliminary examination set for December 23.
