SCHOOLCRAFT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AMFM) – As Kalamazoo County officials continue working to add affordable housing four new modular homes for low-income residents are becoming available early this month.
The homes are locatef in Schoolcraft Township’s Sugarloaf Mobile Home Park. A total of 10 homes are being added to the mobile home park just outside of Portage. They are all expected to be ready by Christmas.
According to the Kalamazoo County Public Housing Commission a two-bedroom, two-bathroom home will cost $870 a month to rent, while a three-bedroom will run $920 a month, which includes the $440 lot rental fee.
Rent is intended to be affordable to low-income families earning 40% or less of the area median income. That’s $40,320 per year for a family of four.
The commission will select families facing homelessness or housing insecurity with school-aged children.
$700,397 from the county housing millage is being used for the project. Kalamazoo County is also providing a with a $321,500 interest-free loan to support infrastructure upgrades in the park.
The county’s eight-year 0.75-mill “Homes for All” millage was approved by voters in 2020.
