KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Although a bid is not guaranteed, the Western Michigan University football team became bowl eligibile and also captured the Michigan MAC Trophy after wrapping up the regular season with a 26-18 win over Eastern Michigan at Waldo Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Several seniors made key contributions to the win on Senior Day, led by running back Zahir Abdus-Salaam. Abdus-Salaam had a career-high 135 yards rushing on 19 carries with one touchdown and three catches for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Senior linebacker Donald Willis had a team-high 14 tackles, including a sack, and classmate Bilahl Kone had a key interception while helping WMU’s defense hold the MAC’s top passing offense to just 91 yards.
Wins over EMU and Central Michigan University this season gave WMU the Michigan MAC Trophy.
The Broncos finished 5-3 in the conference and 6-6 overall. They will now have to wait to find out if they get an invitation to a bowl game.
