KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools already use metal detectors at sports events and other for extracurricular activities and will soon begin talking about using them daily at the doors of high schools.
Last night, the school board approved the purchase of additional detection units to update the ones they are using now. Superintendent Dr. Darren Slade says they look like short white poles, the kind you see at grocery stores.
He says using them to check students as they come to school is a separate question. He really believes they add an extra measure of security, but it’s not his decision to make.
They will they will be scheduling opportunities to get community input soon.
Slade says detectors are now a common feature in most urban school districts. He says most mass shootings occur in suburban schools, but this would add that extra layer of security and prevention.
