CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Calhoun County Board of Canvassers continues to count the votes in the 44th District State House race even though the campaign for Republican challenger Steve Frisbie has filed a lawsuit against them to stop the proceedings.
The Battle Creek Enquirer reports the lawsuit would stop re-tabulation of Battle Creek absentee ballots.
The Calhoun County web site continues to show Frisbie with a 58 vote lead, 20,823 to 20,765 over Democratic incumbent Jim Haadsma.
Frisbie was initially called the winner last week after the unofficial results showed he had a nearly 1,400 vote lead. But a programming error involving a pair of high-speed absentee ballot tabulators led to almost 2,800 votes not being counted.
In a statement issued by the Michigan Democratic party, Haadsma said, “I want to see every vote accurately counted, regardless of whether it impacts the results of the election. Confidence in our elections is essential to the health of our democracy, and the people of Battle Creek deserve to know that every effort was made to ensure the accurate tabulation of their votes.”
There has been no comment from the Frisbie campaign.
