KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools trustees have approved plans to build a new central kitchen at the site of the old Chime Elementary School in Oshtemo Township.
Every day thousands of children rely on the schools for breakfast and lunch. Michigan schools now provide free meals to all students, regardless of need.
KPS finance director Laura Kayser asked the board to approve the funding last night.
The new facility will provide support services to all the school kitchens in the district, along with the meals sent to the district’s 17 elementary schools.
They call it a scratch kitchen because they will be cooking dishes from raw ingredients and not pre-processed foods.
Board president Ti’Anna Harrison says this is wonderful news.
District facilities manager Karen Jackson says they hope to start construction next month and have it operational in early 2026.
The district has been working to replace their current central kitchen for a few years, and the demolition of Chime School on 9th Street, provided the land.
