WEBBERVILLE, MI — Three of the four persons killed late Saturday night when a semi-truck was unable to stop in time to avoid crashing into stopped vehicles on westbound I-96 near the Webberville exit were female members of a Lansing family.
The Michigan State Police say 17 others were injured in the crash. Police say traffic had been stopped on the freeway to allow crews to run electric lines over I-96. State Police say they had just reopened the roadway when the accident occurred.
The truck driver survived the accident and was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries. Police have not identified the driver or the deceased.
Police say the deceased women were 20, 43 and 47-years-old.
The westbound lanes of I-96 over M-52 reopened Sunday night after MDOT inspected the structural integrity of the bridge and deemed it was safe.
