LANSING, MI — A statewide poll commissioned by The Detroit News and WDIV-TV shows residents in the state are evenly split over the federal government funding the makeover of a Lansing auto plant in order for it to produce electric vehicles.
The retooling of the GM Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant needs a $500 million grant from the federal government to go forward, according to the automaker.
The survey of 600 likely voters, reported by the Detroit News today, found that about 46.1% of voters oppose the Biden administration’s $500 million grant while 45.6% said they support it. The Glengariff Group in Lansing conducted the poll.
The GM plant currently assembles Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans, after GM ceased production of the Chevrolet Camaro muscle car in December. The current administration said the funding would save 650 jobs in mid-Michigan and create 50 new positions.
