DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An off-duty Detroit police officer has died after calling 9-1-1 while suicidal and getting into a shootout with responding officers.
The officers were injured in the shooting and are in stable condition.
Police Chief James White says they heard gunshots when they arrived and identified the man as a member of the Special Response Team.
Audio PlayerThe off-duty officer approached the vehicle the responding officers were taking cover behind, shot one in a leg and the other in a thigh, before one of them returned fire and killed him.
The off-duty officer has been identified as Sergeant Jacob Moss, who had recently returned to active duty after taking medical leave.
Sergeant Moss called 9-1-1 saying he was suicidal, armed, and wanted to talk to a negotiator on Monday.
The two officers who responded and were injured have been released from the hospital.
