KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The football field at Western Michigan University’s Waldo Stadium will now be known as Stafford-Smith Field.
The new name follows the $5 million gift given to WMU by David Stafford, Ronda Stafford, and their family.
He played nose tackle on defense for Western from 1986 to 1988 and says it was “one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”
Stafford-Smith Field is being named for Stafford-Smith Incorporated, a family-owned food service vendor company based in Kalamazoo and founded by Stafford’s grandfather in 1940.
Under his leadership, the company has grown to 17 locations in the U.S. and three satellite locations that do business around the world.
The $5 million gift will directly support future football projects and ensure continued success and excellence in the Bronco football program.
The university will recognize the family and celebrate the gift at their homecoming game October 26 against Kent State.
