KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners have unanimously approved a new ordinance that bans foot traffic from construction zones, despite allegations it’s aimed at the homeless.
City Attorney Aaron Leal drafted the new plan to limit liability and improve safety by keeping pedestrians and construction machines separated.
But several homeless advocates claimed it was created to give Kalamazoo Public Safety another excuse to hassle the homeless.
Commissioner Stephanie Hoffman defended the new ordinance.
Commissioners also approved a new ordinance that will add bike lanes to roads and sidewalks on the list of routes that it’s illegal to block. A violation could mean a ticket.
