CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A 20-year-old Marshall man was killed Thursday night in a motorcycle crash at the I-94/I-69 interchange.
Michigan State Police from the Marshall post say the crash happened just before 8:00 p.m. after the motorcyclist tried to speed away on eastbound I-94 from Troopers who had earlier tried to pull him over for not having a registration plate.
Troopers were side by side with the motorcycle, to initiate a traffic stop.
State Police say he refused to pull over. He then sped up and continued heading east on I-94.
State Police policy prevented the troopers from pursuing or chasing the fleeing motorcyclist. Troopers are prohibited from engaging in a vehicle pursuit for common traffic violations.
A preliminary investigation related to the crash indicates that as the motorcyclist continued speeding away he entered into heavy traffic at the I-69 interchange.
He then tried to split lanes and struck the front of a passenger car. The motorcycle then went of control which cause the man to be ejected and struck by oncoming traffic.
The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no reports of any injuries to the other involved motorists.
It is also unknown if the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. Traffic was shutdown near the scene for approximately three hours for processing and cleanup.
The crash remains under investigation.
