KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – 50 years is a long time, especially for minor league hockey.
Kalamazoo Wings owner William Johnston says they’ve been able to be successful in Kalamazoo for a “tremendous span of time” as they prepare for their 50th season.
The team held its season kickoff news conference yesterday at Wings Event Center.
The K-Wings have won three league championships and played professional hockey’s first-ever game on colored ice for St. Patrick’s Day in 1982 with their first green ice game, which has continued since.
They unveiled a Wall of Honor outside of Section 1 yesterday recognizing 50 players, five coaches, and five builders who have made an impact in Kalamazoo.
The K-Wings also announced they will retire number 11 for former center Brent Jarrett in January. Jarrett played for Kalamazoo from 1981 to 1982, returned from 1983 to 1989 and was interim coach at the end of the 2007-08 season.
Jarrett ranks second in franchise history for single season points with 122 and assists with 82.
