COVERT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Restarting the Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert Township could take as long as two years.
That is according to the Biden administration as the U.S. closed a $1.52-billion loan to Holtec International to restart the plant.
The loan came from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA also issued funding to two electric cooperatives to purchase power from Palisades once it restarts.
No nuclear power plant in the United States has ever been restarted after shutting down to be decommissioned.
Holtec has wanted to get the plant going again by next fall.
