KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo man who pled guilty to 14 felonies during an armed robbery and assault last August has been sentenced to 17-40 years in prison.
Juan Alvarado-Lopez also received two years for felony firearms charges, but that sentence will run concurrently.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says the charges stem from an incident in which Alvarado-Lopez fired multiple shots at employees and customers during the robbery of the grocery store Tienda Guatemalteca at 2111 South Burdick Street.
Alvarado-Lopez fled the store before he crashed his vehicle into the sign for Candlewyck Apartments along South Burdick Street near Pratt Road and started running away. As a KDPS officer was driving up toward Alvarado-Lopez, he started shooting and hit the patrol vehicle, according to court documents. Shrapnel did hit the officer, who had minor injuries.
He was arrested three days later and confessed to police that he committed the armed robbery.
KDPS released body cam footage of the Alvarado-Lopez shooting at the officer.
