KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) -The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is reaching out to the community regarding the recent uptick in attempted vehicle thefts, particularly targeting Kia models.
KDPS says the issue has been linked to widely shared social media information that exposes an ignition security vulnerability in these vehicles. They say criminals are breaking windows and then breaking the steering column to access the ignition, allowing them to start the car without a key.
Over the past month, KDPS has recorded at least 12 attempts to steal Kia vehicles, with only two being successful. This is largely due to newly installed ignition cylinder protector devices.
In response to this vulnerability, Kia is offering these devices free of charge to owners who fear their vehicle may be stolen. However, KDPS says criminals will not be aware that the vehicle has this enhancement until after they have broken in and caused potentially hundreds of dollars in damage.
KDPS recommends that Kia owners utilize a visible anti-theft device to deter thieves from breaking into the car in the first place. Additionally, dealerships are offering decals that state the vehicle has been updated.
Anyone with information about the vehicle thefts or any other criminal activity is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Division at (269)337-8139. Information can also be provided anonymously through the Kalamazoo Silent Observer tip line at (269)343-2100, the “P3Tips” app, or online at www.KalamazooSilentObserver.com.
