KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Two of the larger educational institutions in Kalamazoo County have just approved their budgets for the coming school year.
Kalamazoo Public Schools will have less money to spend in the upcoming year with the expiration of federal COVID dollars. Last year their revenue totaled $221 million. Chief financial officer Laura Kayser says this year their total revenue will be $207 million.
Western Michigan University vice president for finance Jan Van Der Klay says they will be spending about $5.7 million more than last year.
Both boards approved their budget proposals unanimously.
The state’s universities and public schools will have a little more to spend because their payments to the teacher’s pension fund will decrease this coming year. The state Legislature approved that as part of their 2025 budget early yesterday morning.
