KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Today is Juneteenth, the national holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the U.S.
That means that Kalamazoo and Portage city halls will be closed for business, and so with the County Administration Building.
It will also mean a few events, although two major celebrations were held at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and in Bronson Park last Saturday, which is the official state observance of the holiday. Today is the national holiday.
Northside organizer Gwen Hooker says there are a few today.
Kalamazoo County Parks Director David Rachowicz says they will be waiving their usual admittance fees today, bringing back Free Park Day.
Portage city council member Jahan Ain Young says it marks the date that General Gordon Granger sailed into Galveston Harbor, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
You may find some banks will be closed today, and don’t wait for the mail, because the US Postal Service is taking the day off.
