PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Even though school buildings escaped damage that struck the city May 7, the Portage Public Schools canceled classes for three days as clean-up in the area was underway. Now the district has learned it will not have to make up those days at the end of the school year.
Superintendent Mark Bielang said the district requested an exemption to the rule that requires schools to provide 1,098 hours of instructional time each year in Michigan. The schedule includes room for six days that can be canceled for things like snow. Portage Public Schools had already used up its six days before the tornado hit.
Bielang says 20 students haven’t been able to return home after the storms, but the district will help out those students’ families with money from a federal homelessness program.
The final day of classes for all the district’s schools is Friday, June 7. Graduation for Portage Northern High School will be Thursday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Western Michigan University’s Miller Auditorium, while the Portage Central High School graduation will be Friday, May 31 at 7:00 p.m. at Wings Event Center.
