KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – While Michigan’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate remained at 3.9 percent for the third consecutive month during April, the unemployment rate continues to drop in Kalamazoo and surrounding counties.
Data released by the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics shows Kalamazoo County’s April jobless rate at 3.0 percent, down from 3.5 percent in March, and the same as April 2023.
Allegan County’s unemployment rate dipped to one of the lowest in the state for April 2024 at 2.8 percent, down from 3.4 percent in March. All other area counties also saw declines for April, with Calhoun County at 3.7 percent, Cass County at 3.5 percent, St. Joseph County at 3.5 percent, and Van Buren County one of the highest in the area at 4.1 percent.
State officials say Michigan’s construction and professional and business services sectors recorded the largest numerical job gains last month, with each industry adding 4,000 jobs in April. The state’s seasonally adjusted total nonfarm payroll jobs rose by 40,000, or 0.9 percent.
