PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage Department of Public Safety says an 18-year-old Galesburg man was arrested and a female juvenile could face charges too for looting a business in the 2000 block of West Centre Avenue that was damaged by Tuesday’s tornado.
Portage Police responded to the call around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday for subjects entering a storm-damaged business and possibly stealing items. When they arrived, officers contacted two individuals and confirmed that they had been in the building and were in possession of items taken from the business.
After contacting the owner of the business, the Galesburg man was arrested and taken to the Kalamazoo County Jail. The case was submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office with the charge of Breaking and Entering of a Building with Intent to Commit Larceny being authorized.
The second suspect, the juvenile female from Kalamazoo, was turned over into the custody of her parents with charges being submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The Portage Department of Public Safety Police Division says it will be providing extra patrol attention to the areas of the city impacted by the recent storm.
