AUDIO: Sheriff Fuller discusses tornado damage

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued a state of emergency for Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Branch, and Cass counties after two tornadoes were confirmed in Portage. Another tornado was reported in Union City, south of Battle Creek and a fourth is under investigation.

176 homes were damaged at the Pavilion Estates Mobile Home Community and several destroyed in Portage, according to Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller.

Taylor Kuehl lives in Pavilion Estates.

Fuller says about 20 people were injured and taken to the hospital. He describes their injuries as non-life-threatening.

A FedEx facility in Portage was also heavily damaged and people were trapped inside for a time.

Portage Public Schools have canceled classes for today.

Consumers Energy has about 24,000 without power.
