KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – This is Kalamazoo Valley Community College Month.
About 9,000 students of all ages, backgrounds and interests attend the college annually according to KVCC vice president Danny Alexander.
KVCC president Marshall Washington told Kalamazoo city commissioners in a recent presentation that they not only get students seeking a four-year degree started, but train a lot of non-traditional students to get jobs that don’t require a bachelor’s degree.
They train the people the local economy needs most, EMS crews, nurses, police officers, auto mechanics, even brewery operators and wind turbine technicians.
Both the Kalamazoo city and Kalamazoo County commissions are expected to approve resolutions honoring KVCC this week.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proposed that tuition at the two year schools be free to all high school graduates. If the legislature includes it in the budget, it could give community colleges even a bigger role in workforce expansion.
It’s already free for anyone 21 years old and above on a temporary basis, until this November. After that only those 25 and above will get free tuition.
