KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Shots fired at a residence on Kalamazoo’s northeast side Tuesday morning resulted in lockdown at a local elementary school.
Around 11:45 a.m. officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the report of shots fired into a residence in the 3500 block of Mount Olivet Road. When they arrived, officers secured the residence from the outside and began to call for the occupants to exit. They say the last subject to exit was the shooting suspect, who was taken into custody.
Police say only about 20 minutes had elapsed from the time of the call until the suspect was in custody, and no one was injured as a result of the shooting.
The sound of shots fired that prompted the initial call to 911 also caused nearby Spring Valley Elementary to immediately go into lockdown. The lockdown was lifted once the scene was made safe.
Although the shooting remains under investigation, the KDPS says the incident involving the nearby residence had no connection to the school or students.
They describe the incident as a domestic dispute arising from ongoing family issues.
The suspect was arrested on a variety of charges including Assault with Intent to Murder, Home Invasion, and a variety of weapons charges. The suspect will be arraigned Thursday afternoon.
