EAST LANSING, MI — A late night board meeting on Sunday at Michigan State University was eventful. The board accepted the resignation of board chair Rema Vassar and voted to censure Trustee Briana Scott.
The MSU board also voted to punish Trustees Vassar and Dennis Denno by urging Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to consider dumping both of them from the board. Vassar’s resignation only affected her position as board chair.
The votes came after the board accepted the findings by the Washington, D.C.-based law firm Miller & Chevalier that Vassar and Denno violated the board’s ethics policies and bylaws. Vassar called the steps “punitive and over the top” and agreed she had missteps and is willing to learn from her mistakes.
Trustee Scott was censured for violating the school’s Code of Ethics. The board shakeup comes as new school President Kevin Guskiewicz started his new job on Monday. He is the school’s sixth president in six years when considering temporary appointments. The school’s leadership has been in tumult since the sexual abuse scandal involving disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar.
