PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Accusations and threats are being exchanged between the Portage City Council and advocates for a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
About a dozen speakers appeared again to demand that the council pass such a resolution last night or be judged harshly for not acting when they could.
Council members say they have been receiving threats, and they take accusations that they are racists and facilitating genocide to heart.
Council member Vic Ledbetter said he even heard a threat at their last meeting during public comment.
Mayor Patricia Randall repeated that they have a long standing policy that they don’t make resolutions about things that don’t pertain to city business.
The pro-peace speakers also took it as an affront that they are “threatening” simply by expressing their opinions.
City Manager Pat McGinnis says they have begun leaving cards at the door of meetings letting the public know how they can reach federal officials if they have concerns about federal matters.
Unfortunately the speakers made their comments at the beginning of the meeting, and the council‘s response came hours later at the end of the meeting, after residents had gone home.
