ROME (Reuters) – A two-year-old girl died and eight people were missing after a migrant vessel shipwrecked off the coast of Lampedusa on Monday, Italian media reported.
Italian authorities managed to rescue 43 people but the two-year-old girl died on board the ship that was carrying them ashore, newswire AGI wrote.
The missing people include two children, the survivors were quoted as saying by AGI.
Italy is experiencing a surge in sea migration with nearly 150,000 arrivals so far this year, according to interior ministry data.
