KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Schools will be beefing up their efforts to look after the social and mental wellbeing of students this fall, thanks to additional state funding, grant money, and help from community agencies.
This means more staff in schools. And KPS Director of Special Education Rikki Saunders says its in addition to their current staff.
Saunders says their staff will be supervising interns from Western Michigan University’s School of Social work to help in targeted Elementary schools.
She says because they are younger, they will have a more direct connection, and that contact with an adult is all some students need.
Saunders says by providing the free in-school therapy sessions to students and families that have issues, they hope to address a lot of problems.
The program which began this summer, is expected to pick up momentum as the school year begins. Public Schools are scheduled to get back into session in Kalamazoo County on Monday, August 28th.
