PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A cooling center is open at the Portage Zhang Senior Center, 203 East Centre Avenue, from 7 a.m to 9 p.m. (unless conditions warrant an earlier closure or extension) Wednesday, August 23, and Thursday, August 24, in response to the Heat Advisory issued by the National Weather Service for Kalamazoo County.
The National Weather Service predicts hot and humid temperatures with heat indexes near 100 degrees over the next two days, which health experts say makes heat-related illnesses possible during this period.
Residents are encouraged to stay in an air-conditioned indoor location when possible, drink plenty of fluids even if they don’t feel thirsty, schedule outdoor activities carefully, limit strenuous outdoor activities and pace themselves, take cool showers or baths to cool down, check on friends and neighbors, and NEVER leave children or pets in cars.
In the event of a medical emergency, dial 9-1-1.
The cooling center at the Portage Zhang Senior Center is open and available to the public.
