KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Since opening to the public in 1964, the Kalamazoo Nature Center has had only three executive directors. And now the search is on for it’s fourth.
According to a news release, the current director, Nathan Smallwood is set to retire on September 1, 2023, after serving in the position since 2018.
Previous directors include Lewis Batts and William Rose.
“On behalf of the board, we thank Nathan for his contribution and commitment to KNC and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” said Denise Keele, KNC board chair. “Our search for Nathan’s replacement is underway. We expect the transition to be seamless, as the board works with the executive team on day-to-day matters during the interim.”
KNC stepped up its efforts under Smallwood’s leadership to restore its architectural crown jewel, the Visitor Center. The improvements include a new dome and geothermal heating system officials say will move KNC closer toward its goal of carbon neutrality by 2035.
With a recent grant from the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation, KNC will realize even more extensive renovations in 2024.
“While I will always be proud of what we accomplished at KNC, it’s time to relocate and spend more time with my kids,” said Smallwood. “They’re preparing for college, possibly in the Mountain West, and I want to be part of that adventure. Meanwhile, I will follow KNC’s progress at a distance, knowing that the organization remains in very good hands, positioned for continued success in the years ahead.”
