KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Opponents of a request to Kalamazoo County to renew and expand funding for a YWCA Reproductive Health Program for the poor, have been telling Commissioners for months they oppose it.
Those opponents say it’s because the program provides gender affirming care, pregnancy prevention and abortions to its clients.
The non-profit group got $40,000 last year and is asking for $100,000 this year. This week, the County Board received comments from 17 opponents, to include three healthcare professionals who say the money would be better spent on pregnancy programs.
Daniel Hamilton, who is the director of Public Policy at the YWCA says for the poor, there is no other access to this kind of healthcare.
The Kalamazoo County Board is set to vote on the measure as the request will be a part of next year’s budget talks, which passed with a close vote last year. That vote is expected to be close once again.
