KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – They snipped the ribbon Monday morning, August 14 on the new Edison Academy in Kalamazoo.
And when kids arrive for the first time in a few weeks, the population of the school will be down.
School Principal Dr. Julie McDonald says they bused their students to a temporary school on Westnedge for the past two years and many opted to switch schools in the interim. But she says once they hear how much better this building is than their old facility, they expect to eventually fill the place.
She says the classrooms are big and so is the gym, and the technology and the playground is all new.
The new Edison Academy houses pre-kindergarten through the 5th grade with students reporting for the first day of class on Monday, August 28.
The $18-million dollar facility was paid for with voter approved bonds.

Superintendent Darrin Slade says the gym in this building rivals gyms in much larger schools. It can be opened into the cafeteria where there is a stage.

This neighborhood was the site of the School District’s first playground. Now its the site of the newest playground.
