GRAND RAPIDS MI (WKZO AM/FM) –
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved an over-the-counter contraception drug for the first time, and it has a West Michigan connection.
The once-a-day pill Opill is produced by Perrigo, and will allow women to purchase a birth control drug in the same aisle as pain relievers and cold remedies.
There will be no age restrictions on buying Opill, and Perrigo is set to begin shipment of Opill early next year.
Perrigo officials have not decided on a price for the drug.
Over-the-counter medicines are generally much cheaper than prescriptions, but they aren’t covered by insurance.
Perrigo has an extensive presence in West Michigan, with plants in Allegan and Holland, a warehouse in Martin, and its North American headquarters in Grand Rapids.
