KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A project to improve Maple Street between Park Street and Burdick Street is scheduled to start on Monday, May 15.
According to city officials, the roadway will be milled and repaved with new asphalt and pavement markings added, including center-line paint and new buffered bike lanes. The temporary speed hump will be made permanent, and a second speed hump will be added west of the curve to help calm traffic and increase safety.
The south sidewalk opposite the guardrail at the curve will be widened and connected to ramps and crosswalks for safer pedestrian crossings mid-block. New street trees will also be planted in select locations in the curb lawn along the street.
City officials go onto say the street will remain open to local traffic during the project with most construction is expected to be completed in July, with trees being planted in the fall, due to seasonal planting limitations.
The $267,400 project is funded through the City’s Capital Improvement budget.
