KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — They call it march for Meals. Kalamazoo’s Meals on Wheels program has reached its 60th anniversary, and is celebrating with other programs around the country this month.
Taylor Rossi with Milestone Senior Services says every day, seniors who are signed up for the program get a visit from a friendly face at the door, delivering those meals.
“We like to say that we serve more than a meal. We always want to make sure our seniors are safe. Our volunteers are the reason we can do what we do,” said Rossi who stressed that the program has never been more important, especially at a time when the senior population is the fastest growing age group in the nation, with more of them wanting to remain in their own home.
“It’s wonderful to see that we’ve reached 60 years and hopefully more 60 years to come, making sure our seniors are getting not only nutritious meals, but having connections, preventing falls and isolation.”
And Rossi, who is the Nutritional Program Manager for the organization, says while they are based in Kalamazoo and deliver to seniors in Kalamazoo County, they also have a hub in Battle Creek with employees and volunteers who prepare and deliver meals to seniors in Calhoun County.
And both the Kalamazoo and Calhoun County hubs also provide support to agencies in both Allegan and Branch Counties who operate their own Meals on Wheels program.
