PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — In response to last week’s ice storm, the city of Portage Department of Public Works is getting ready to pick up brush that fell from the trees.
The special brush collection will begin on Monday, March 6, and city officials say residents can begin placing brush and limbs to the front yard curb at their homes starting immediately.
Collection will take place in three designated zones with zone 3 being completed by Friday, March 24. Residents are asked to place the brush at the curbside by 7 a.m. on the designated Monday for their zone.
Branches should be between 4 and 6 feet long and less than 3 inches in diameter.
Each street will be cleared one time and each zone will be cleared within its designated week. Crews cannot return to pick up brush placed out late.
The City of Portage Compost Facility is also set to help and will be open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the end of March for resident drop-off services. The compost facility is located at 10905 Oakland Drive, just south of Osterhout Avenue.
More information on the special brush pickup can be found online at portagemi.gov/280.
The city of Kalamazoo is also offering collection of fallen branches and limbs. Residents can place any volume and any sizes of fallen branches, limbs, or debris from trees at the curb for collection. Material should be placed in the curb lawn or at the curb, keeping sidewalks and roadways clear.
Kalamazoo city officials say crews will be working 12-hour shifts and weekends to complete the cleanup and will be supported by two contractors and a crew assisting from the City of Grand Rapids.
The caution however that crews will not be able to clear tree debris from any wires, and that if there is a downed power line or fallen branches or limbs on a power line, to report it to Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050.
In addition to curbside collection, Kalamazoo city residents can drop off branches, limbs, and tree debris in the marked location at 322 East Stockbridge Avenue.
