KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Graphic Packaging Industrial in Kalamazoo is the subject of violations from both the state of Michigan and the city of Kalamazoo following a spill of paper mill wastewater that made it’s way to the Kalamazoo River back in October.
According to MLive, state environmental regulators issued a violation notice for the facility earlier this month for an unlawful discharge of discharge of “process wastewater” into the North Limits Drain, connecting to the Kalamazoo River.
The city’s public works director also told MLive and the Kalamazoo Gazette that the company will also be cited by the city of Kalamazoo for the October 20 spill that occurred at 1810 Pitcher Street.
According to the spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Jill Greenburg, the exact material in the industrial wastewater is still being investigated, and that any potential fines against Graphic Packaging are also a part of the state’s investigation.
Between 3,000 and 5,000 gallons spilled, and about 1,500 gallons went to the Kalamazoo River, according to the violation document issued by EGLE.
