SPRINGFIELD, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A 44-year-old Battle Creek man who was wanted as a parole absconder crashed Sunday night after leading police on a brief chase.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department says their deputies saw a vehicle in a business parking lot in the 500 block of Upton Avenue in the City of Springfield.
Deputies recognized the vehicle because had fled from law enforcement earlier in the week. The driver of the vehicle was being sought for an active parole absconder warrant with the Michigan Department of Corrections.
As deputies tried to make a stop, the vehicle fled southeast on Upton Avenue.
It eventually hit a guardrail on Fountain Street and overturned causing it to land on the railroad tracks.
The pursuit lasted for approximately two minutes and traveled a mile and a half. Deputies immediately called for ambulance and fire personnel.
Deputies also had the railroad authorities contacted to stop all trains in that area.
The man being pursued was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire personnel.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. After being evaluated there, the suspect was lodged at the Calhoun County Jail for an active parole absconder warrant, fleeing and eluding from police, and driving while license suspended.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office were assisted by Battle Creek Police, the Battle Creek Fire Department, and LifeCare Ambulance.
