KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Bike Friendly Kalamazoo announced the presentation of three BFK 2022 Civic Leadership Awards in October on Friday, October 28.
The awardees, ModeShift Kalamazoo, the City of Portage, and Vicksburg Community Schools, earned recognition for their efforts to make the community more bicycle friendly.
ModeShift Kalamazoo demonstrated their leadership by organizing the “Re:Cycle – A Sustainable Transportation and Exposition” during Kalamazoo Bike Week. Held in Bronson Park, the event showcased groups dedicated to childhood safety and a sustainable, energy-efficient future. Free test rides on electric and cargo bikes were offered, as well.
The City of Portage demonstrated their civic leadership by significantly increasing the number of certified League Cycling Instructors in the community. They were the first municipality in the area to host the League of American Bicyclists’ prestigious instructor program. The city also was recently awarded the League of American Bicyclists’ Silver-Level Bike Friendly Community Award.
Vicksburg Community Schools demonstrated their leadership by becoming the area’s first school district to adopt the All Kids Bike Kindergarten PE program in its elementary schools. In addition, Superintendent Keevin O’Neill introduced the program to the superintendents of Climax-Scotts Community Schools and Schoolcraft Community Schools, which resulted in the adoption of the program into their elementary schools without spending taxpayer dollars, as the result of a generous grant from The Vicksburg Foundation.
“Bike Friendly Kalamazoo’s board is excited by the work of our 2022 Civic Leadership Awardees,” said Paul Selden, President of Bike Friendly Kalamazoo. “They are truly building community and improving our quality of life through bicycling.”
