EAST LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State University’s President has announced his resignation on Thursday, October 13.
MSU President Samuel L. Stanley Junior gave his 90-day notice of resignation to the Board of Trustees on Thursday, saying that he had lost confidence in the school’s governing board and can no longer serve.
According to a YouTube post from the university, Stanely’s resignation is effective 90 days from October 13, 2022.
MSU has faced national scrutiny in recent years over it’s handling of serial sexual abuser and former assistant professor and USA Gymnastics team doctor, Larry Nasser, who was sentenced to decades in prison for sexually assaulting gymnasts, including Olympic medalists.
Stanley had been under fire since the summer by some trustees, namely for the departure of a business school dean. He said that Sanjay Gupta was removed because of “failures of leadership” related to Title IX, the federal law that bars sex discrimination in programs that receive federal aid.
Stanley was president of Stony Brook University in New York when he was hired three years ago at Michigan State.
He took on his leadership role at the university in August of 2019.
