KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — God’s Kitchen of Michigan, a nonprofit hunger-relief charity serving Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and Portage will celebrate its 11-year anniversary with a free soul food dinner.
The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11 at First United Methodist Church, 111 E. Michigan Avenue in downtown Battle Creek.
The menu will consist of fried chicken, barbecue ribs, macaroni and cheese, collard green, yams, a celebration cake, and bottled water. Dinner is served in a carryout format. Limit one dinner per person.
God’s Kitchen of Michigan will also celebrate the life and legacy of the late Joan Lafayette, who was their co-founder and vice-chairperson. Ms. Lafayette died on February 5, 2021, of natural causes at her home in Battle Creek.
Joan was employed for 29 years at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek before retiring in 2009 as a Nutrition and Food Service Supervisor. She dedicated her time, expertise, and financial resources as a volunteer board member to help God’s Kitchen of Michigan feed homeless and other needy citizens, serving honorably as God’s Kitchen of Michigan’s vice-chair until she died.
Ms. Lafayette is the mother of Pastor William Stein, co-founder and chairman of the hunger-relief charity.
God’s Kitchen of Michigan was incorporated on January 20, 2011, and served its first dinner at First Baptist Church in Battle Creek on Tuesday, October 11 of that same year.
Since that time, more than 152,000 free dinners have been served.
