FORT WAYNE, IN (WKZO AM/FM) — Indiana Michigan Power is answering the call to provide mutual assistance ahead of Hurricane Ian, which is on track to make landfall this week along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
More than 350 line workers, damage assessors, forestry experts, support staff and business partners are traveling to Florida and will be in place before the anticipated storm is expected arrive.
Crews will be set to work 16-hour days to restore electricity to those who may lose power in the wake of the storm.
Officials with the company say employees from Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, Marion, Muncie and Southwest Michigan will join both business partners and mutual assistance crews from all over the country.
Forecasters are predicting hurricane conditions to be upon Florida’s Gulf Coast by early Wednesday morning with storm surge warnings covering Tampa Bay and a stretch of the coast from Tarpon Springs in the north and Flamingo, on Florida’s Southern tip.
Ian made landfall in southwestern Cuba early Tuesday as a major hurricane, with wind speeds dropping a bit from 125 to 115 miles per hour, but expected to go up to 130 as the storm moves back over warm water.
