KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The suspected drunk driver involved in the crash that paralyzed Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officer Tom Maher has been arrested and charged.
According to court records, 31-year-old Deymeon Marcel Todd of Cooper Township was charged on Wednesday, August 24, with operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.
Officer Maher was riding his motorcycle to work when Todd crashed into him on North Riverview Drive, near the East G Avenue intersection around 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 9. The crash paralyzed Maher from the waist down and the lower half of his left leg was amputated according to his family.
Following the crash, the community rallied together to raid money for Maher’s medical bills.
He joined the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety in August 2006.
The charge against the suspect was temporarily denied by the prosecutors office due to the need for the blood toxicology results to be sent back to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department from the state lab.
On Friday, August 19, the Kalamazoo County Prosecutors Office authorized the felony charge of Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) causing serious injury against the suspect.
On Thursday, August 24, after confirming the warrant had been signed, members of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department were able to locate Todd in the
1600 block of North Pitcher Street in the City of Kalamazoo.
Todd was taken into custody without issue and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
