KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — There’s an update on the condition of a Public Safety Officer who was severely injured when his motorcycle was struck by a drunk driver at around 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 9.
Public Safety Officer Tom Maher was on his way to work when he was struck. The family says he will be paralyzed from the waist down and had part of a leg amputated.
Chief Vern Coakley says he remains in stable condition, is off the ventilator, and is continuing his recovery.
“He’s breathing on his own, and he’s reacting and collaborating with his family at this time. So that is great news,” said Coakley.
A Gofundme campaign for Maher and his family has raised $70,285 toward a $75,000 goal with a total of 606 donations to date.
