KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer who was injured in a weekend crash is now paralyzed from the waist down.
Officer Tom Maher was struck by a suspected drunk driver at around 6 a.m. on North Riverview Drive Saturday morning, July 9, while he was riding his motorcycle to work.
According to Maher’s family, the officer underwent several surgeries with one of them, being the amputation of the lower half of his left leg.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash and says that no criminal charges have been filed against the driver pending the results of a blood test which they say could take up to six weeks.
A GoFundMe page was set up by family and friends on Monday which has already raised more than $50,000 towards the $40,000 goal.
A line on the page said quote, ” On behalf of the Maher family, thank you for all the support and donations. We all appreciate it more than words can say! Please continue to pray for them!”
