KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It wasn’t on the agenda but a group called the Democratic Socialists of Southwest Michigan has been asking Kalamazoo Commissioners for weeks to approve a resolution supporting “Medicare for All”.
Vice Mayor Don Cooney moved it to be approved at Tuesday night’s July 5 meeting.
But Mayor Dave Anderson says the legislation is dormant. He says that his greater concern is that Medicare may not be there for anyone if congress doesn’t act to replenish funding.
“The Medicare Trust Fund will be going into a deficit mode starting in 2023. And at this point, the projection is that the trust fund will be zeroed out by 2028,” said Anderson.
The Mayor voted for the resolution, but doubts it will have any impact.
This week, Democratic Leaders in the U.S. Senate proposed a stripped down alternative that would simply allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices.
