PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The State of Michigan fireworks law allows the use of consumer fireworks from Wednesday, June 29 to Monday July 4 until 11:45 p.m. on each of those days.
The City of Portage Department of Public Safety is advising residents to use caution when handling fireworks of any kind.
They’re reminding those using them for their celebrations that fireworks, including sparklers and firecrackers, burn at a temperature of more than 1200 degrees Fahrenheit – a temperature hot enough to cause third-degree burns.
Safety experts stress that no person under the age of 18 should handle and discharge fireworks, and those that are able to handle them, should at a minimum, wear eye, face, ear, and hand protection.
They’ll also need to have on hand sufficient water supply or means of extinguishing fires prior to the ignition of fireworks.
The recent extreme hot and dry weather will also present a significant fire danger across the area.
